Portland Fire and Rescue Puts Out Two Fires at the Same Home
Wednesday, February 03, 2016
Portland Fire and Rescue responders first reported to a house fire at 5017 SE 88th Aenue at 6:10 PM on Monday, February 1.
When fire crews arrived, the found a boarded up, vacant house with black smoke coming from the front. As the crews entered the house, the fire rapidly increased in size and started burning the trees on the side of the house. An electrical line also burned through and fell to the ground, causing an electrocution hazard to emergency crews.
The house was found full of material which made it very difficult to move around and extinguish the fire, according to rescue workers. The windows also had metal bars on them, preventing crews from using them to get in or out of the house.
The incident commander ordered all crews out of the house due to unsafe conditions and instead put the fire out from the outside. The fire took roughly an hour to control.
Fire and Rescue were then called back to the SE 88th Avenue residence at 9 PM after reports of an explosion from neighbors. Neighbors said that after they heard the explosion, the entire first floor for the home was burning.
The explosion occurred roughly 20 minutes after crews had put out the last of the hot spots and had returned to the fire station. When crews returned to the fire, they found flames coming from the entire first floor and the roof collapsed.
It took roughly 30 minutes to control the fire, and crews remained at the house until nearly midnight. Portland Fire and Rescue's Arson Squad has determined the second fire was caused by arson. The first was described as “undetermined,” and an investigation is ongoing.
