Police Release Name of Victim in Saturday’s Fatal Crash Involving Bicycle Rider

Police have identified the man killed in a crash on Saturday, March 19 as 17-year-old Austin Joe Hrynko.

The driver involved in the crash, Franklin Eugene Drobny, 55, remains in Multnomah County Jail on charges of reckless driving, DUII and Manslaughter II.

The Incident

During the investigation, police learned that Drobny, driving a 2003 Dodge Dakota pick-up, was driving eastbound on Center Street and turned left in front of Hrynko who was riding westbound.

Drobny was attempting to turn into the cul-de-sac to his home in the 14200 block. During the left turn, Hrynko struck the right corner of Drobny's truck, which caused fatal injuries.

Initial Investigation

On Saturday, March 19, East precinct officers received a call about a crash in the area of S.E. Center St. and S.E. 142nd Ave. Initial reports indicated that a vehicle struck and killed a bicyclist.

Drobny was detained immediately and police later confirmed the initial reports that a Dodge Dakota pickup struck a bicyclist.
