Monday, February 8 marked the beginning of two weeks of a “safety belt blitz” happening at police departments across Oregon. The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office will be working day and night to increase proper seat belt and hold car seat use.
Oregon State Police, sheriffs and local police will be watching for proper safety belt and child car seat use during the statewide traffic enforcement “blitz.” This enhanced "Click It or Ticket" enforcement is paid for by dedicated funding from Oregon Department of Transportation and the Oregon State Sheriff's Association.
This is the first of three annual traffic enforcement "blitzes" dedicated to proper safety belt and child restraint use and runs February 8 through February 21, 2016.
The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office will be adding extra patrols to enforce Oregon safety belt and safety seat laws. Deputies will be watching and contacting motorists who fail to properly use their safety belt, or who do not properly secure a child in the appropriate safety seat.
Properly using safety belts and child restraints holds a person safely in place and inside the car to prevent injury from occurring during sudden stops, swerves or a crash. Without a safety belt or child car seat, occupants can be thrown against each other, the interior of the car or completely out of the vehicle which greatly increases chances of serious injury.
Oregon law requires children less than forty pounds be restrained in a child seat. Children under one year or weighing less than twenty pounds must be restrained in a rear-facing child seat. A child over forty pounds must be restrained in either a child seat or a booster seat appropriate for their size until they reach age eight or 4' 9" tall AND the adult belt system fits them correctly.
For help with child seats, refer to the seat manufacturer's instructions, vehicle owner's manual, or your local child seat fitting station.
