Beaverton Police Release Name of Officer Who Shot Suspect

The Beaverton Police Department on Wednesday identified the officer in an officer involved shooting that occurred last weekend.

Police said that officer Derek Vuylsteke, who has been a Beaverton Police Officer for four years, shot the gun that killed 44-year-old Adam Jarjalainen on January 16.

Police said that Officer Vuylsteke and another officer arrived on SW Murray Blvd North of the entrance to the apartment complex at approximately 7:12 a.m. on Saturday January 16th, responding to the report of an “unwanted male” at the location.

They initially interview individuals involved and determined that no crime had been committed before learning that Karjalainen had an outstanding arrest warrant. The officers returned to the location, where Karjalainen was now armed and confronting the officers.

The officers ordered Karjalainen to stop and drop the gun, he continued towards the officers with the gun in his hand. Officer Vuylsteke being in fear for his safety and the safety of others fired two rounds from his duty handgun striking Karjalainen. Karjalainen fell to the sidewalk and no longer had control of the gun. The officers advised dispatch that shots had been fired and to have medical respond immediately. The officers then began providing Karjalainen with the medical assistance they were able to perform.

Police said that it was found out during the investigation that Karjalainen had told the woman he was staying with that he was going to go out in a blaze of glory with the police that morning.
