Iceland Prime Minister Resigns Amid Panama Papers Controversy

Tuesday, April 05, 2016

Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson

The prime minister of Iceland, Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson, has resigned after the Panama Papers revealed that he owned an offshore company with his wife. He is the first international leader to step down amid the Panama Papers scandal on Tuesday.

Some of the documents leaked early this week showed a connection between Gunnlaugsson's wife and an offshore company that held significant claims over Iceland's failed banks.
