Literopolis: A Weekly Round-up Of Portland Literary Events

Portland, to say the least, is an eclectic city with a vast spectrum of interests and predilections. Which is wonderful and why we love it so! It can sometimes be tricky, though, to curate an event round-up that caters to everyone's literary tastes--one man's trash being another man's treasure etcetera.

This week, however, there is an event that I do believe will unite the city in a consensus of awesomeness, as Portland is visited by the stellar, singing astronaut that is Chris Hadfield! The former ISS Commander has collected some of his most awe-inspiring photographs and accented them with commentary and his unique perspective in a book called 'You Are Here'. He touches down at Powell's City of Books on Burnside this Friday at 7:30pm, and I'm pretty certain there will be crowds of PDX earthlings there to greet him. Don't miss it; he's sure to be pure poetry!

Also happening this week:

Monday kicks off in a most Portland way with Bicycle Small Press night at Powell's on Hawthorne. Come celebrate Portland-based small press books about bicycling! See Facebook for line-up and further event details. 7:30pm, 3723 SE Hawthorne Blvd. FREE

Also on Monday, Tony's Tavern hosts multimedia artist Lou Woods in celebration of her book 'I Am Not The Girl Of Your Dreams'. An open mic will kick the night off at 8:30pm, 1955 W Burnside St. FREE

Powell's presents a top-notch line up of ladies on Tuesday with 'Spent', a book that explores women's complicated relationship with shopping. Editor Kerry Cohen will be joined by several contributors, including Emily Chenoweth and Monica Drake. See Powell's website for the full line-up. 7:30pm, 1005 W. Burnside St. FREE

And on Tuesday at Powell's Cedar Hills location, filmmaker and former road manager for Janis Joplin presents his memoir 'On The Road With Janis Joplin'. 7pm, 3415 SW Cedar Hills Blvd. FREE

On Wednesday, Broadway Books hosts Elizabeth Lopeman in conversation with Mary Rechner. Their story collections - 'Trans Europe Express' and 'Nine Simple Patterns for Complicated Women', respectively - are both published by Portland-based Propellor Books. 7pm, 1714 NE Broadway. FREE

Powell's plays host to another rock music memoir on Thursday. David J. Haskin's will be at the Hawthorne location with his book 'Who Killed Mister Moonlight?'. 7:30pm, 3723 SE Hawthorne Blvd. FREE

Later on Saturday The Switch reading series presents an evening of poetry by Chris Ashby, Jamalieh Haley, and Mark Wallace at the IPRC. 7PM, 1001 SE Division St. FREE
