Literopolis: A Weekly Round-up Of Portland Literary Events

As well as its unique, one-time literary events, Portland has an abundance of regular reading series, clubs, and showcases. With no less than seven of them dotted around the city this week, you lovers of words are sure to find an inspiring place to return to again and again. 

The Portland'5 Foundation has partnered with The Attic Institute to present "Poets on Broadway," a free poetry series sponsored by Portland'5 Centers For The Arts. This Monday's event features acclaimed poets Rick Kenney and W.S. Di Piero in the Antoinette Hatfield Hall. 8-10 p.m., 1111 SW Broadway St. Free.

Elsewhere on Monday, Irish theater company Corrib Theatre presents a staged reading of 'Spokesong,' a play about the owner of a Belfast bicycle shop. The reading takes place at Artists Repertory Theatre at 7:30 p.m Monday, 1515 SW Morrison St. $10. 

Jennifer Faylor reads from her poetry collection, 'Edison's Ghost Machine', at the IPRC on Tuesday. Inspired by rumors that Thomas Edison attempted to create a machine that communes with ghosts, Faylor's collection freshly explores the perennial themes of love and grief. 7:30 p.m. 1001 SE Division St. Free.

At Reading Frenzy Tuesday, Derrick Brown & Greg Gerding read from their newest works: 'Our Poison Horse' (Brown) and 'Loser Makes Good' (Gerding). See Facebook for further details about the authors. 7 p.m., 3628 N Mississippi Ave. Free.

At Broadway Books on Tuesday, Oregon Book Award-winner Penelope Scambly Schott reads from her poetry collection, 'How I Became An Historian'. 7 p.m., 1714 NE Broadway St. Free.

Reading Frenzy's Verse Union Poetry Club has a new date and time; it is now being held every third Wednesday. This Wednesday, join them in a discussion of last month's book, 'The Book of Joshua' by Zachary Schomburg, followed by a 7 p.m., reading by Hajara Quinn from her poetry collection 'Unnaysayer'. 6 p.m., 3628 N Mississippi Ave. Free.

Oregon author, Valerie Geary, reads from her thrilling debut novel, 'Crooked River', at Powell's Cedar Hills location on Wednesday evening.  7 p.m., 3415 SW Cedar Hills Blvd, Free.

Also on Wednesday, Glyph Cafe & Arts space hosts the Mountain Writers Series reading, featuring Dennis Schmitz and his latest poetry collection, 'Anismism,' and Carl Adamshick with his latest collection, 'Saint Friend,' 7-9 p.m., 804 NW Couch St. Free.

Loggernaut Reading Series presents Elissa Washuta, Jamalieh Halet, and Susan DeFreitas at Ristretto Roasters on Wednesday. The Loggernaut series brings together writers working across different genres to share their work for an evening. 7:30 p.m., 3808 N Williams Ave. Free.

Wednesday also brings Alison Hawthorne to Annie Bloom's Books in Multnomah Village. Her book, 'Zoologies,' questions what the disappearance of animals will do to the human imagination. 7 p.m., 7834 SW Capitol Hwy. 

Mark Bittman's latest culinary collection examines 'How To Cook Everything Fast'. Bittman will be joined in conversation by Liz Crain at Powell's on Wednesday. 7:30 p.m., 1005 W Burnside, Free.

Rain Or Shine Coffee House hosts a regular Thursday evening reading series. This week Ann Hendren and Michael Dal Hornsby read from their latest work. 7-9 p.m., 5941 SE Division St. Free.

Also on Thursday, artist Adam J. Kurtz celebrates the launch of his new book '1 Page At A Time,' a delightfully creative and inspirational journal. Join him for the release and party at Land Gallery Thursday. 6 p.m., 3925 N Mississippi Ave. 

And at Broadway Books on Thursday, Portland author Brian Doyle reads from his new collection of essays, 'Children and Other Wild Animals'. 7 p.m., 1714 NE Broadway St. Free.

Also on Thursday, the Independent Publishing Resource Center presents the IPRC Zine of the Month get-together at Lauretta Jean's Pie. Bring your Zines to share or trade! There will be Happy Hour pie slices for $3.50 and special drinks. 5-7 p.m., 3402 SE Division St. 

Vikram Chandra reads at Powell's on Friday. Mostly known for his novels, Chandra is also a computer programmer, and his first work of nonfiction, 'Geek Sublime', explores the worlds of art and technology. 7:30 p.m., 1005 W Burnside, Free.

The Gobshite Quarterly Reading Series is happening at Glyph on Saturday. Readers include Trevor Dodge, Kassten Alonso, Douglas Spangle, Amy Temple Harper, Brenda Taulbee, David Hapgood, and Pescos B. Jett. 5:30-7 p.m., 804 NW Couch St. FREE https://www.facebook.com/events/668394083259028/
