The Original Carter Family

A new documentary film by indie filmmaker Beth Harrington, in association with Argot Pictures, will begin its theatrical release in Portland on Thursday, September 17th at the historic Hollywood Theatre.

The Winding Stream – The Carters, The Cashes and the Course of Country Music tells the story of The Original Carter Family, a family at the heart of Americana music as pioneers of the genre from the Virginia Hill country. The Carter Family's influence on generations of musicians is perhaps most well documented in the context of Johnny Cash. The dramatic story of how the family rallied to help Cash gain victory in his battle with substance abuse, and how the Outlaw Country singer promoted the Carters name and music throughout his years, is a unique tale of a symbiotic relationship both in art and in business.

Featuring conversations with Rosanne Cash, John Prine, George Jones, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Kris Kristofferson, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Sheryl Crow and many more...perhaps the headlining event of the documentary is one of the final interviews with Cash himself.

Filmmaker Beth Harrington will be in attendance for a Q&A session at the screening on September 17th. There will also be a special pre-show performance by the Johnny Cash tribute band - Counterfeit Cash. Tickets are on sale now for $8 at thewindingstream.com and the Hollywood Theatre box office. Additional screening dates can be found on the Argot Pictures website.

The soundtrack for the film will release October 16th via Omnivore Recording. The soundtrack can be pre-ordered now.
