California Senator Kamala Harris has dropped out of the 2020 presidential race, she announced on Tuesday.

“I’ve taken stock and looked at this from every angle, and over the last few days have come to one of the hardest decisions of my life. My campaign for president simply doesn’t have the financial resources we need to continue,” said Harris in a statement.

She continued, “I’m not a billionaire. I can’t fund my own campaign. And as the campaign has gone on, it’s become harder and harder to raise the money we need to compete.”

According to Politico, Harris will visit the early states this week to thank staff and supporters.

The announcement of Harris dropping out of the race comes one day after Montana Governor Steve Bullock dropped out

Harris’ Political Career

Harris has served as the United States Senator from California since January of 2017.

Prior to the, she served as the  27th District Attorney of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011 and 32nd Attorney General of California from 2011 until 2017.

Harris won the election as California's Attorney General in 2010 and was reelected in 2014.

In November of 2016, she beat Loretta Sanchez in the 2016 Senate election to succeed outgoing Senator Barbara Boxer, becoming California's third female U.S. Senator.

Harris announced her candidacy for President of the United States on January 21, 2019.

“Eleven months ago at the launch of our campaign in Oakland, I told you all: “I am not perfect. But I will always speak with decency and moral clarity and treat all people with dignity and respect. I will lead with integrity. I will speak the truth.’ And that’s what I have tried to do every day of this campaign,” said Harris in her statement.

According to Politico, Harris qualified for the December debate in her home state, but was low on cash, and lacked resources to air TV ads in Iowa.
