Where to Volunteer On MLK Day

Monday, January 19, 2015

Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 19 was proceeded by a host of volunteer events in the Portland Metro Area this past weekend.

The Martin Luther King Weekend of Service was sponsored by the United Way of the Columbia-Willamette and Hands on Greater Portland.

Over 60 volunteer events were held over three days in a dozen metro-area cities, from Saturday to Monday.

Volunteers will be pulling ivy in Portland’s Forest Park, fixing up the Tualatin Library and building homes for Habitat for Humanity in Beaverton.

While many of the events were full, a handful are still accepting volunteers.

Check out a full list here.

The weekend of service is in it’s eigth year, and was prompted by the National Day of Service established to celebrate the life and accomplishments of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

King once famously said “Life’s most persistent question is: ’What are you doing for others?’

King was slain 1968 after having led dozens of successful civil rights campaigns, such as the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott, that helped to end legal racial segregation of African Americans in the southeastern United States.
