NEW: Beaverton Students Behind School Shooting Rumor “Thought It Would Be Funny”

Tuesday, December 02, 2014

Beaverton High School in Beaverton, Ore.

Students at Beaverton High School are safe and secure after police determined an online rumor of a mass shooting to take place Dec. 2 wasn’t a credible threat.

Police officers were at the school Tuesday morning to offer support to students and staff. For students, it was the first day back at school after the Thanksgiving holiday.

According to Beaverton Police Officer Jeremy Shaw, authorities began investigating the rumor when it first appeared on Instagram Nov. 29. when students and community members reported seeing a conversation on the site between two Beaverton High School students who were discussing a mass shooting at the school.

Beaverton High School Principal Anne Erwin said the school didn’t record an unusual number of student absences during the day.

There were no finals or SAT exams scheduled during the day in question that might have  potentially motivated a student to commit the hoax.

While being interviewed by investigators, the two juveniles admitted to the hoax.

“These two just thought it would be funny to post something like that,” Shaw said.

Charges of disorderly conduct are still pending against the two juveniles.
