Spike Network’s “Thrift Hunters” Feature Portland’s Fat Fancy

This past summer Portland's own Fat Fancy clothing boutique had the joy and pleasure of having the cast and crew of The Spike Network's show "Thrift Hunters" at their downtown Portland store.

"Thrift Hunters" are modern day treasure hunters who travel the country to find bargains and turn second-hand goods into first-rate profit.

The result of that visit to the local plus-sized boutique will be featured in a segment of the show's Portland episode.

Fat Fancy co-owners Carlee Smith and Annie Maribona will join others at a party on Saturday night at Local Lounge to watch the episode unspool. Prior to its premiere Smith talked to GoLocalPDX about what it was like to have the "Thrift Hunters' co-hosts Jason T. Smith and Bryan Goodman show up at their store.

GoLocalPDX: What was it like to have "Thrift Hunters" cameras in Fat Fancy?

Carlee Smith: It's always a bit strange to have a camera around recording you doing random everyday things. The hosts, Jason and Brian, were great to work with and the crew was super laid back. So, overall it was a fun and stress-free experience.

Are you allowed to talk about anything they found at your store on the show?

We want people to tune into the show this Saturday. Fat Fancy has been something that folks in Portland have enjoyed for years and we want our future fans to get a taste as well.

Is this the first time Fat Fancy has been on television?

We were on a French television progam called "Arte" for an episiode about Portland. Fat Fancy was also one of the settings for an episode of the UK's "Fern Cotton Show" about Beth Ditto of The Gossip. They were featuring all of Beth's favorite places to shop in Portland and Fat Fancy was one of them.

Why do you think they picked you?

Fat Fancy has great clothes and a great mission. We keep our prices affordable and styles cute! Both Jason and Bryan are cool plus-size dudes with great taste, so it makes sense that they would want to come check out Fat Fancy.

Isn't it true you get a lot of celebrities in your store?

It's true. In the past we have had, of course, the amazing Beth Ditto of Gossip, Cameryn Manheim of "Law and Order," Rajah and Delta Work from "RuPaul's Drag Race," Leslie Hall from Leslie and the Lys, and the lovely (singer) Adele.

Join Fat Fancy fans for a viewing party and libations at Local Lounge (3536 NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd) Saturday, Nov. 8. The show starts promptly at 9:30pm.
