PCC Expecting More Than 1,000 For Powwow Event

Tuesday, December 22, 2015

Portland Community College is preparing for more than 1,000 guests for its leading cultural event, the “Wacipi” Traditional Powwow.

The Powwow is a traditionally popular event, and this year’s is sent to be no different.

"One of the main goals of the day is to focus on youth," said powwow volunteer Daniel Soucy. "The powwow enlightens visitors about Native American culture and provides inspiration, fellowship and encouragement to Native American students at the college as they work toward their goals in education."

The event will be held on Saturday, January 23 at the Health Technology building on the Sylvania Campus, located at 12000 SW 29th Ave.

The festivities will kick off with the Grand Entries dancing and drumming at 1 PM. The day will feature drum groups and dancers from across the region, Native American crafts and food, activities for children, and raffle prizes.

The event will also include a free community dinner at 5:30 PM. Best of all, the Powwow is free to enter.
