Five Fun Things To Do This Weekend: Jan. 9-11

Aaaaand we're back with another round-up of 5 ways to spend the weekend rather than lamenting the return to normal, every-day work and school schedules. This weekend you have your pick between listening to a lovely pianist, marvelling at artform that is animation, entertaining yourself with scandalous vaudevillean acts, enjoying some hard-hitting bouts of roller derby, and riding pants-less on public transportation. (Don't knock that last one 'till you've tried it.)

OMSI: A Look Inside Animation
For a little over three months, OMSI has partnered with the Cartoon Network to bring Portland an extensive exhibit providing an in-depth look at the science behind the art of animation is set to end this Sunday on January 11. This exhibit contains 6,000 square feet of exhibits about the animation process, hands-on demonstrations with the tools of the trade, and art provided by Portland animation studios LAIKA and SuperGenius. To celebrate the end of the exhibit, OMSI”s empirical theatre will be showing three anime classics this weekend: Akira, Princess Mononoke, and Ghost in the Shell. Seriously, it would be an absolute to shame to miss out on this incredible opportunity to explore animation from behind-the-scenes. OMSI, 1945 SE Water Ave., ends Sunday Jan. 11, $13 for adults, $9.50 for seniors/youth, FREE for museum members. Click HERE to purchase tickets.

Ravel’s Bolero
Personally I’m a sucker for beautiful piano music. World-class pianist Marc-André Hamelin will be performing two concerts this Saturday and Sunday at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, brought to you by the Oregon Symphony. He will be performing multiple pieces composed by Henri Dutilleux, Olivier Messiaen, Franz Liszt, and for the finale, Maurice Ravel’s Boléro. Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, 1037 SW Broadway Ave., 7:30 pm, Saturday & Sunday Jan. 10-11, $22-125. Click HERE to purchase tickets.

Rose City Rollers
This weekend is shaping up to be all roller derby, all the time. On Saturday two of Portland’s home teams the Break Neck Betties and the Heartless Heathers will be doing battle while on Sunday four of the junior teams comprised of teenage girls learning to play competitive roller derby will be going toe-to-toe. The Daughters of Doom are going up against the Voodoo Dolls and the Rainbow Bites will be looking to take out the undead Avengers. The Hangar at Oaks Amusement Park, 7805 SE Oaks Park Way, Saturday Jan. 10 at 7 pm, and Sunday Jan. 11 at 1 pm, $14-20 and $7 respectively. Click HERE to purchase tickets.

Miz Kitty’s Parlour January Enchantment!
Portland’s recurring semi-all-ages vaudeville novelty show is back for another season beginning this Friday. Every month Miz Kitty hosts an event filled with hand-picked musical, dance, and comedic entertainment. This month’s special guests include musical and dance groups The Satin Chaps, Boy ad Bean, The Quiet American, and The Cur Tails, juggling by Rhys Thomas, poetry performed by Mindy Nettifee, and a comedy performance by Erin Jean O’Regan & Starr Ahrens. Alberta Rose Theatre, 3000 NE Alberta St., 719-6005, 8:00 pm, Saturday Jan. 10, $20 in advance, $23 at the door. Recommended for ages 17+, minors OK when accompanied by a parent or guardian. Click HERE to purchase tickets.

The No Pants Subway/MAX Ride
Portland’s no stranger to public nudity, even when it’ll be cold and rainy outside. This Sunday January 11 marks the 12th anniversary of the No Pants Subway Ride, now annual global event. Participants will be taking off their pants (but leaving on their underwear) and travelling on the MAX en masse while keeping as much of a straight face as possible. Downtown, 2 - 7:30 pm Sunday Jan. 11. Click HERE for more information.
