While Portland is seeing signs of
explosive growth and a consistent decrease in its unemployment rate, a new
study by WalletHub ranked Oregon the 5th least financially "safe" sate in America.
WalletHub determined states' financial safety ranking based on the percentage of the population lacking health insurance coverage, the unemployment rate and the home foreclosure rate. The study measured the financial safety of all 50 states and D.C., Oregon ranking at number 47.
The study also ranked the states on other safety factors including road safety, workplace safety, frequency of natural disasters, and home and community safety. Oregon ranked 32 out of the 50 states and D.C. for overall safety.
Oregon scored highest in road safety at number 14, followed by workplace safety at number 20 and natural disaster frequency at 22. Considering that Portland was just named the number one most bike-friendly city in the U.S., Oregon's high marks for road safety are not surprising. Road safety was determined by the number of fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles of travel, the number of DUIs per 100,000 residents, and pedestrian and cyclist fatality rate per 100,000 residents. However, a recent slew of bike accidents is starting to raise questions about whether or not Portland is getting more dangerous for cyclists.
Oregon's safety ratings also fell short of its West coast neighbors Washington and California. Washington ranked as the 13th safest state overall and California as the 23rd. Washington's financial safety rating was far better than Oregon's, while California's was very close.
