Health Goth: New Lifestyle Trend Created in PDX
Thursday, October 30, 2014
According to Complex, Portland based, alternative R&B band Magic Fades (comprised of Mike Grabarek and Jeremy Scott) established the “Health Goth” trend back in 2013. They spotted the Health Goth scene wearing form-fitting, monochromatic, and label clashing fashion at Portland clubs and Club Chemtrail parties.
Their Health Goth community Facebook page is a medley of black mesh, Adidas sports bras, robotic body parts, and the ever-popular white Nike socks and Nike Benassi swoosh slide sandals combo.
Soon others caught on to this trend like DJ Johnny Love aka Deathface and Caitlin Cunningham aka Asylum Sisters, who created healthgoth.com. They made the trend about exercising your body (no skipping leg day), eating right and wearing black. The website features sports bras and 100% polyester t-shirts with upside Air Jordan and Adidas logos for $25, and the #HealthGoth Fitness Bible. The fitness bible warns health goths to “remember the most important thing: your body is 80 percent made in the kitchen,” and that “you lose fat by eating right and by doing cardio.”
Alexander Wang’s collection for H&M (which some are calling Wang “R” Us), brought “Health Goth” to the mainstream. The collection coming out November 6, featured models wearing WANG printed knit leggings, black windbreakers, scuba material jackets, and an accessory line of padded nylon duffle bags, beanies, and compression socks.
