On Thursday, Portland Fire and Rescue Personnel responded to a residential fire in the southeast neighborhood of Portland.
The fire started at 6:28 PM at a house located at Southeast 64th Avenue. Firefighters said that initial reports indicated that everyone was out of the home and that the fire started as a chimney fire.
Firefighters said that no one was injured in the fire. Crews responded and quickly extinguished the fire and verified that it did not spread into the walls, ceilings or other spaces in the home.
According to Portland Fire and Rescue, fireplaces and chimneys are the number one source of home heating equipment fires. In order to keep safe, Fire and rescue advised residents to:
- Keep kindling, paper, and decorations away from fireplaces and wood stoves.
- Never use gas or lighter fluid to start a fireplace or wood stove.
- Don't burn cardboard boxes, newspaper, or trash. They burn too hot and can cause a chimney fire.
- Have a service person inspect and clean your chimney or wood stove each year.
