Monday, February 01, 2016

An Ashland man died while swimming in the Pacific Ocean on Friday at Whaleshead Beach State Park, located on Oregon’s southern coast.

Alexander Howell, 23, of Ashland was swimming in the ocean about 75 yard with a friend, Alex smith, 22, of Medford, at 2 PM on January 30. According to eye-witness accounts, Howell indicated that he needed to get back to shore.

However, heavy surf and a strong rip current prevented the swimmers from making an easy return to shore. Howell and Smith were separated in the rough waters. Smith was able to get back to shore, where he found two other friends, but Howell was not able to get to shore.

His friends were unable to initially find Howell. The group called 911 and started a search of the shoreline. howell was eventually found unresponsive on the beach. The friends performed CPR until they were relieved by emergency responds.

An Oregon State Police Patrol Sergeant from he Gold Beach Worksite responded to the scene, along with local fire/EMS, Curry County Search & Rescue, US Coast Guard and Curry County Sheriff Department.

Howell, a student at the Southern Oregon University and originally from Vista, California, was transported to Curry General Hospital for advanced life-support. He was declared dead at the hospital.
