Amanda ‘‘Ice’’ Habrowski Joins Live 95.5

And from the looks of it, the fans were right. Habrowski has parlayed her 15 minutes of reality fame into a career in radio. Originally on the air in her hometown of Detroit, she was more recently stationed at a radio station in Fort Wayne, Ind. Now Ice will join Live 95.5 as the weeknight deejay Monday through Friday from 7 p.m. to midnight.
Habrowski, who was christened with the name "Ice" by the Public Enemy dude with the big clock, has also appeared on another VH-1 reality show I Love Money, but her real love is radio. As well as house and techno music. And cheese. The lady is big into cheese. GoLocalPDX chatted with the reality star turned radio deejay about her new gig:
GoLocalPDX: You have been in radio for several years; what originally compelled you to go on the air?
Ice: When I was in high school, I did the morning announcements so I think part of that sparked my radio interest. Along with everyone telling me my voice was unique growing up, so I wanted to do something with it!
Can you tell me a little about what cities you have been a radio DJ in?
I started on the air in Detroit part time on the weekends and overnights, then made the move to Fort Wayne for my first full-time opportunity. Portland will be my third city and I couldn't be more excited!
What is the best thing about being on the radio?
Everything! The word 'work' never comes to mind. I love being able to be a person's best friend and hang out with them wherever they're listening from. Just knowing I can put a smile on someone's face and brighten up their day just by cracking the mic makes me love what I do even more.
What is the worst thing?
The worst thing would be being in a city for a long period of time while building relationships with listeners and then when another opportunity comes along (Portland) you have to leave all of that and start over. I will miss my Fort Wayne #icecubes and my family and friends back home in Detroit!
If you had to choose, would you rather be on a reality show or on the radio?
Tough question! I'd say radio, I see myself being in this industry for the rest of my life. Reality TV is only a month or two stint. Who knows, maybe one day I can have a show like Howard Stern did on E! so I can do both! Howard is easily my favorite radio personality of all time.
You are a big lover of dance music. What do you think of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) infiltration of mainstream radio and music?
I think it's great. The more EDM we have on the air the more people can get their groove on! I'll tell you one thing though, if you want real underground techno and house music rather than the mainstream EDM, take a trip to Detroit and visit the TV Bar - I mean, it is the birthplace of techno!
What are you listening to right now?
I'm actually listening to Bob Marley. I'm all about good chill vibes.
Who are you excited to introduce from the music world to the Portland audience?
I would have to say Disclosure, going back to the EDM question, they definitely provide a great sound to get down to.
Do you spin music in clubs as well?
I do not, although I really would like to tap into that field of the industry. I've hosted plenty of club nights but to host and DJ would take the cake. Maybe in my next life.
What is your favorite club in Portland?
I'm all about dive bars and underground spots; the Whiskey Bar is one of my favorites.
Do you miss being on reality television?
I do. Everything was free!
What experience did you appreciate more: “Flavor of Love 3” or “I Love Money 2?”
Definitely “Flavor of Love 3,” I wouldn't have been on “I Love Money 2” if it wasn't for that show and Flav. He really was an awesome guy and I do not regret that experience at all.
Do you feel you were accurately portrayed on the show?
I was 21 at the time and feel everything you saw on the show was exactly how I am in real life. Sure they twisted my words and actions but that's what reality TV does to get ratings! I will tell you this, though, I wish I was who I am today on the shows. I've grown up a heck of a lot and feel I could have gone a lot further.
Ah well, there's always Big Brother or Survivor!
Is Flava Flav different when the cameras weren't rolling?
Don't let him read this, he was always adamant about the spelling of his name, Flavor Flav, not Flava, ha! He was more chill when the cameras were off but we all were.
What is your favorite kind of cheese and why?
I can't pick just one! I'm all about Swiss, Gouda, Sharp Cheddar, Bleu, Brie, heck, I just love cheese man, it's all too good!
You are working the evening shift. Will you miss out on parties and nightlife?
Not at all! I'll get off at midnight and head straight to the bar! And there's always the weekends!
What do you do to unwind when you get off your shift?
A nice glass of red wine and “Forensic Files.” I've been watching that religiously lately ...
Ice is the weeknight deejay Monday through Friday from 7 pm to midnight at Live 95.5.
