The Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Oregon and Southwest Washington, as well as some of the most respected local women chefs, winemakers, brewers, distillers and farmers gathered together on a blustery Sunday to celebrate women in the culinary industry and spread awareness about ovarian cancer. The event was simply titled "St. Catherine's Day."

Based on a cultural event that takes place throughout Europe each fall, "St. Catherine's Day" is a day of celebration for the women of the culture, though different meanings come from each culture itself.

In France on St. Catherine's Day it is customary for unmarried women to pray for husbands, and to honour women who've reached 25 years of age but haven't married—called "Catherinettes."

Catherinettes send postcards to each other, and friends of the Catherinettes make hats for them—traditionally using the colours yellow (faith) and green (wisdom), often outrageous—and crown them for the day.

In Portland though St. Catherine's Day was a food and drink tasting event showcasing the bounty of the Pacific Northwest and local female leaders in the food and beverage industry.

The day-into-evening event kicked with an early afternoon cocktail hour at The Jupiter, followed by a short march of hat-wearing guests to the event's two venues: Coopers Hall and Union/Pine.

Each venue featured food and beverage tastings including the work of such celebrated chefs as Kachka's Bonnie Morales, Nostrana's Cathy Whims, Small Wares Johanna Wares and Irving Street Kitchen's Sarah Schafer among others. On the liquid side, Mint/820's Lucy Brennan was just one of the mixologists on hand to hand over the good stuff.
