Party Report: Basic Rights Oregon’s “Ignite” at Art Museum

More than 900 guests, including Gov. John Kitzhaber, attended Basic Rights Oregon’s annual fundraising gala—IGNITE—on Friday night at the Portland Art Museum.

The annual celebration raised close to $300,000 for BRO, the Northwest’s largest organization dedicated to ending discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

The packed gala attracted several politicians, those both in and running for higher office. Emcee state Rep. Tina Kotek, speaker of the Oregon House, paved the way for Kitzhaber to speak. The governor, who congratulated BRO on its victories this year, encouraged the crowd to continue the fight for full equality and to make sure their voices are heard.

This year’s celebration occurs in the wake of historic victories for LGBT equality in Oregon, including winning the freedom to marry, and securing Oregon Health Plan coverage of medically necessary health care for transgender Oregonians.

The evening included a gala dinner, both live and silent auction, and a memorable performance from the cast of Dreamgirls, who performed The Beatles classic, “All You Need Is Love.” The night concluded with a dance party deejayed by Hold My Hand.

“The event was an opportunity to celebrate the many victories of the past year and also build momentum for the work ahead,” said Jeana Frazzini, Basic Rights Oregon executive director. “Our work is far from over, and Basic Rights Oregon will continue to work towards achieving not only legal equality, but also lived equality for every Oregonian.”
