Green Zebra Grocery, a healthy convenience store in Portland's Kenton neighborhood, is celebrating their one year anniversary on Saturday.

The one year birthday party will feature free cake and ice cream, samples from local vendors and growers, and free pumpkins for the kids.

After one year of business, Green Zebra is planning to open their second store on Division St. next year, and hopes to have 20 stores by 2020, according to CEO Lisa Sedlar.

“Our healthy convenience model has never been done before and we made a conscious decision to focus all of our energy, time and money into making this one store work well before we started our second," Sedlar said. "We’ve heard from our neighbors in SE Portland that they are eager for us to begin building, and we’re grateful their support and patience--we look forward to taking care of them when we open next year.”

Green Zebra Grocery employs nearly 50 people and offers health insurance to both full and part-time staff members. The business purchases sustainably-raised, local and organic products from over 60 Pacific Northwest growers and vendors, according to Peter Koehler, Green Zebra business director.

The one-year anniversary celebration will be open to everyone Saturday, Oct. 11, 11 AM-2 PM, at the store on 301 North Lombard St.
