Portland Ranked #1 Most Bike-Friendly City in U.S.

Monday, May 11, 2015

Portland is the number one most bike-friendly city in the U.S., according to a study by BetterDoctor.com. The study ranked 52 American cities based on the percentage of commuters that bike to work, the number of bicycle-related fatalities in each city, and the amount of state funding allocated to biking infrastructure.

Of Portland's total daily commuters, 6.14 percent go by bike, and there are 1.1 fatatlities for every 10,000 people in a year. Federal transportation funds for bike and pedestrian projects in Portland equal $8.35 per capita.

With an overall score of 87.59, Portland beat out Washington D.C. at the number two spot with a score of 84.31, and Minneapolis at number three with a score of 77.08. Overall, the West Coast is the best coast for bike-friendliness with four out of the top 10 cities belonging to Oregon and California: Portland, Oakland, Sacramento, and San Francisco. Portland's other West Coast neighbor, Seattle, ranked at number 11.

Among the least bike-friendly states in the U.S. are Fort Worth, TX. Detroit, MI, Freson, CA, and Phoenix, AZ.

The study used data from the U.S. Census 2013 American Community Survey, the Alliance for Biking and Walking, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
