2019 NFL Free Agency – Checking In On The Seattle Seahawks

Sunday, March 24, 2019

The Seattle Seahawks have had a somewhat quiet free agency so far, which is not unusual. But the moves they have made have had a big impact on how the 2019 Seahawks will look. There have been more players re-signed than have been brought in from other teams. I think this points to an emphasis on continuity and can have an impact both on and off the field.

Seattle has signed or re-signed five players so far and will probably make more moves before the NFL Draft, but let’s take a look at who they have gotten so far.

K.J. Wright LB

Wright is now one of two players on defense who is still on the Seahawks from their Super Bowl win. He has been a steady playmaker his entire career in Seattle. He was re-signed to a two-year deal after missing much of this year to a knee injury. He is a great leader whether he is on the field or off of it, and he can contribute no matter where you play him.

D.J. Fluker OG

It looked like Fluker might not get re-signed this offseason after some other teams expressed interest. But Seattle got the two-year deal done and now the big mauler can pop back into his right guard spot. Fluker brought some excitement and energy to Seattle’s o-line this past year. The fans appreciated it and you could tell the rest of the team responded to his energy well. This is a great signing and shows the Seahawks’ commitment to continuing the great running game.

Mychal Kendricks LB

Kendricks is a special signing. He signed a deal with zero guaranteed money. He did this because he is still waiting to see if he will do any jail time for insider trading. It is being lauded as a very team-friendly deal, which it is. Kendricks is a speedy and instinctive linebacker. He can provide great depth, start or simply take a leadership role with some of the younger linebackers.

Mike Iupati OG

This is one of the two free agents Seattle has signed from other teams so far. Iupati is a big, strong run-blocking guard. He and Fluker could be considered to have similar skill sets, in that they both use their immense strength to push people around instead of finesse. He has played for San Francisco and Arizona for his entire nine-year career, so he knows the NFC West. Iupati could provide another great run-blocking guard to pave the way for the Seahawks’ backs.

Jason Myers K

Myers is coming into a Seattle special teams’ room that goes through kickers on a yearly basis right now. He had a great year for the New York Jets, hitting more than 91% of his field goals. He also showed good power by making six of his seven attempts from past 50 yards in 2018. The Seahawks need to find a kicker and Myers is as good a guy to turn to as any. We will see if he keeps up his hot streak from last year though.
