Wheeler to Challenge Hales in Race for Mayor of Portland
Wednesday, September 09, 2015
Ted Wheeler’s campaign has notified the media that he will be holding a 10 a.m. press conference to formally announce his campaign for Mayor.
As GoLocalPDX has been analyzing for months, Oregon Treasurer Wheeler is expected to publicly announce for Mayor of Portland. Wheeler’s entry into the race is a huge blow to Mayor Charlie Hales.
Situation Analysis
It is rare for an incumbent Mayor of a top ranked city that gets glowing reviews to face a challenge by a top ranked elected official from his own party, but that is the situation Hales faces.
As top Democratic consultant Kari Chisholm told GoLocalPDX last month, “Absolutely Charlie Hales can be beat. I have no doubt in my mind.”
Chisholm said that speculation that Hales may be unstoppable due to incumbency is not enough.
“He struggled to connect with Portlanders in his first term in office,” Chisholm said. “A lot of people feel he has made a number of missteps in the management of the city.”
In each situation some perceived Hales to be indecisive.
Top Ranked, Simmering Issues
While the City of Portland gets top rankings for a sweeping range of issues from national publications, the city is facing a number of problems that are beginning to undermine Portland’s soul.
Look for the race on who is best at preserving the spirit of Portland while growing jobs and opportunities.

Portland's mayoral election is still over a year away, but that hasn't stopped incumbent mayor Charlie Hales from launching his campaign. Thus far, Hales has raised over $88,000 in donations from more than 60 donors, whose contributions have ranged from $100 to $5,000 each. Using state campaign finance records, GoLocalPDX compiled a list of Hale's 15 biggest donors, many of which are major power players in Portland's development industry.
