Voters Pass Portland School District Levy Renewal, Measure 26-161

Tuesday, November 04, 2014

Voters passed the Portland School District Levy Renewal, Measure 26-161, according to the Secretary of State. As of 9 p.m. it leads with 69.43 percent of the votes to 30.57 percent of votes.

The levy renewal will continue to fund teaching positions, help to maintain or reduce class size, and support new school programs. Renewing the levy allocates more money to the school district without increasing taxes.

The levy was approved by voters in 2011 to provide funding for schools over five years. In 2013, the Oregon Legislature ended the diversion of some levy revenues to certain areas for levies passed after January 2013.

The levy cost will remain $1.99 per $1,000 assesed property value- same as the 2011 levy.

Proponents of the measure believe the levy renewal will ensure reasonable class sizes allowing more individualized attention for students and the addition of more educational programs.

There are no organized opponents to the measure.
