The cash transaction occurred Oct. 27 and was filed with the Oregon Secretary of State just before 10 PM last night.
Monsanto has contributed a total $5.4 million in efforts to defeat Measure 92 which, if passed, will make Oregon the first U.S. state to require the labeling of food containing genetically modified organisms - or GMOs. The Food and Drug Administration doesn't regulate genetically altered foods, which include vegetables that have been combined with the genetic material of an animal or with the genes of a virus, according to the Organic Consumers Assocation.
Opposition to Measure 92 received the most financial contributions and spent more money than any other campaign in Oregon political history - raising over $17.6 millionand spending a total of $20.6 million — making No on Measure 92 the only political action committee that ended its election season in the red. The No on Measure 92 commission also included DuPont Pioneers ($4.5 million), Pepsi ($1.4 million) and Coca Cola ($1.1 million), among others.
