Election Complaint Filed Against GOP by Libertarian Party Chairman

Sunday, November 02, 2014

James L. Buchal

The Oregon GOP has come under fire for allegedly violating Oregon Campaign Finance Laws, according to a formal complaint filed with the Oregon Secretary of State's Elections Division.

The complaint was filed by Wes Wagner, chairman of the Libertarian Party of Oregon.

In the complaint, Wagner alleges that Portland attorney James Buchal, represented the Republican Party on legal actions meant to "take over the Libertarian Party." Buchal filed an amicus brief in Clackamas County Court on behalf of the GOP on Oct. 15. The brief asked the court to settle a dispute occuring between two warring factions inside the Libertarian Party of Oregon.

A lawsuit was filed last year by Burke, the chairman of the Washington County Libertarian Party, against Wagner and other members of the LPO. The case was dismissed.

According to Wagner’s complaint, the GOP waited too long to disclose Buchal’s representation as GOP counsel.

Wagner also said he estimates Buchal performed approximately $6,000 in legal services for the party without proper disclosure.

In an email to GoLocalPDX, Wagner said he made his complaint as an individual citizen who is also “a party to the lawsuit,” and not as chairman of Libertarian Party of Oregon.
