BREAKING: Ted Wheeler Challenges Mayor Charlie Hales to 12 Debates

Tuesday, September 29, 2015

Top-Ted Wheeler Bottom-Charlie Hales

On Tuesday, Oregon Treasurer and Democratic candidate for Mayor of Portland Ted Wheeler challenged incumbent Mayor Charlie Hales to 12 debates, each on a different issue from the campaign.

Read Wheeler's letter to Hales regarding the debates below:

Dear Mayor Hales,

The City of Portland is facing so many serious challenges and the people of Portland deserve sustained focus and real solutions to these problems. When I announced my candidacy for Mayor, I noted that our city had a homeless crisis; last week you declared it an emergency. Two weeks ago, I voiced my support for a gas tax; last Friday, you decided to agree.

This campaign shouldn't become a political tit for tat. I believe we must give voters an honest comparison of our ideas.

To that end, I am proposing 12 in-depth debates; each debate focusing on a topic of great importance to our city:

-Jobs and the Economy

-Homelessness

-Affordable Housing

-Roads and Infrastructure

-Government Ethics Transparency

-Growth and Development

-Sustainability

-Police and Criminal Justice Policy

-Budget and Taxes

-Transportation and Transit

-Eastside Services

I further propose that we agree to a regular schedule that would allow for a debate to occur every two weeks starting in mid-November and continuing through April. We can partner with various media organizations and community groups to ensure well-run and well-attended debates.

In addition to other community forums, these debates would give voters the opportunity to hear at length from us about these issues—and I believe the campaign should be focused on the issues and how we can keep Portland a  unique—and uniquely great—city with a high quality of life for all its residents.

This is a crucial time for our city's future and we can have a great conversation about making progress in Portland. I hope you agree and we proceed in scheduling debates.

Sincerely,

Ted Wheeler
