The Link Between Schools and Property Values in Oregon
Thursday, August 28, 2014
Kirsten Nicolaisen, GoLocalPDX Digital Producer
"The property values are definitely more expensive in areas with good schools," said Claire Paris, principal broker and owner of Paris Realty Group LLC. "I don't know if the schools are better because the area is more affluent, or if the area is affluent because the schools are good,"

Homebuyers with children and couples almost always ask about schools when looking to purchase, according to Paris.
"Their most important reason for buying a new home is, A: they need more room for the kids; and B: they are worried about schools," said Paris.
Prospective Buyers
Former real estate broker Becki Saltzman said that generally, houses associated with good schools don't sell any quicker. But sometimes, in the fall when school is about to start, there is more competition, she added.
"When there are housing shortages and the time is ticking towards the beginning of the school year, yes, people sometimes start scrambling for places associated with good schools," Saltzman said. "One year, a house came up on the grid near a good school and it was the first one open on the market in three months.
"It sold immediately."
In Portland, neighborhoods with the best reputations also have the highest private school attendance in the nation, Saltzman said, adding that because Portland is so eclectic, people have very different definitions about what a "good" school is.
"What is a good school is not universally agreed upon,” Saltzman said. “Unlike other places where there might be more of an agreement, Portland is unique in that some people might think a school with diversity is better, or a strong arts program is better, etc."
Saltzman advises people to exercise caution when choosing a house based on its association with a particular school.
"If you are thinking of conceding tonight because of the school, the school's reputation could easily change in a few years," said Saltzman.
