Ted Wheeler Comes Out In Support of St. Mary’s Students
Wednesday, August 26, 2015
"I stand with the alumni and students of St. Mary's Academy who disagree with their school's actions. #fightforsma" Wheeler posted on social media today. The post refers to Lauren Brown, a woman who was offered a counseling position at the downtown Portland institution, but lost the potential job when St. Mary's discovered that she is a member of the LGBT community, as originally reported by Willamette Week.
Brown claims that after she informed an administrator of her orientation, the job offer was rescinded and the academy offered her one year's salary, in exchange for withdrawing from consideration and not taking the issue public.
The all-girl school cites its roots in Catholicism for the retracted job offer.
Wheeler is a sixth-generation Oregonian and is currently serving as State Treasurer. He has been public about an interest in running for Mayor of Portland, but has not announced any decision as of yet.
