Portland Man Lights Himself on Fire – Near Death

Sunday, May 29, 2016

A Portland man suffered life threatening injuries after he lit himself on fire on Sunday, May 29.

The Incident

North Precinct officers responded to the call of a possible restraining order violation in the 3700 block of N.E. 114th Ave. Upon arrival, officers attempted to contact the subject.

Preliminary reports indicate that as the officers attempted to speak with the subject, he began pouring gasoline on himself. The officer immediately requested an Enhanced Crisis Intervention Team (ECIT) officer and also asked for medical.

An ECIT officer arrived and was available, however, the subject did not respond to the officers and lit himself on fire.

Officers were able to get a hose and put out the fire on the subject and quickly get him medical attention. The subject suffered life threatening injuries from the flames and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

The joint Portland Fire/Police Arson investigation team is responding to assist with the investigation. The investigation into this incident is in the beginning stages.
