New Research and Think Tank Website, City Observatory, Launches in Portland
Wednesday, October 15, 2014
The site will feature data-driven reports and studies on urban policy topics including crime in cities, transportation, neighborhood tranformation and gentrification, economic opportunity, and industry clusters, according to the website. City Observatory will publish its first report 'The Young and Restless and the Nation's Cities,' on Oct. 20. The report will examine attitudes and location preferences of young workers in the U.S.
City Observatory intends to focus on policies and practices that cities can use to attract, develop and harness talent and create more opportunities, according to Mike Westling of City Observatory.
City Observatory is supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and will be run by urban economist Joe Cortright, chair of the Governor's council of Economic Advisors and co-founder of EconData.net. His research has been cited by the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Business Week, and USA Today.
“How we build and inhabit our cities plays a critical role in tackling national problems ranging from climate change to inequality,” said Cortright. “At City Observatory, we’re excited to participate in and contribute to the discussion of how cities can realize their potential.”
