Information of Portland Police Department was gathered purportedly by Hacking Team, an Italian surveillance company that has information compliled on over a hundred police departments in the United States.
Eugene's Police Department, as well as Seattle and number of police departments in Washington are listed on an interactive map provided by MuckRock, which contains links to the police department emails on WikiLeak.
Muckrock's Shawn Musgrave wrote, "The bulk of the state and local police departments named in the emails are on lists pulled from law enforcement conferences."
FBI Hacking Team Ties
According to Wired, the FBI was one of the clients who bought hacking software from the private Italian spying agency Hacking Team, which was itself the victim of a recent hack. "It’s long been suspected that the FBI used Hacking Team’s tools, but with the publication yesterday of internal documents, invoices, emails and even product source code from the company, we now have the first concrete evidence that this is true," wrote Wired's Joseph Cox.
The revelation comes following the reports last fall that a group of Portland's social activists and some hackers "targeted" 22 police officers for their activity on social media, and were slated to be subject to a release of their personal contact information.
Editors's Note: A previous version had stated that the information was hacked; it is unclear how Hacker Team obtained the information.
