Schill comes from the University of Chicago where he had been the Dean and Harry N. Wyatt Professor of Law since 2010.
Governor Kate Brown released the following statement regarding Schill's appointment:
“This is a great day for the state of Oregon. I would like to commend the University of Oregon’s Board of Trustees for the successful recruitment of Michael Schill, a highly qualified and accomplished academic leader of the utmost caliber. I look forward to partnering with President Schill and the University of Oregon community as this appointment moves the institution forward at a pivotal time. Together with the presidents of Oregon’s other public universities, President Schill will play an important role in ensuring Oregon students have the opportunities for the high-quality, affordable college education they deserve.”
A 1980 graduate of Princeton, Schill earned his Doctorate from Yale Law School in 1984. In 2004, he founded the Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy at New York University. Prior to joining the University of Chicago, Michael served as dean of the UCLA School of Law from 2004 to 2009. His career has also included tenured faculty appointments as Professor of Law and Urban Planning at New York University and Professor of Law and Real Estate at the University of Pennsylvania, according to Chuck Lillis, Chair of the Board of Trsutees of the University of Oregon.
"When we began this search eight months ago, it was clear that this university needed a leader who brings to the table a creative vision, focused energy, unquestioned integrity and a passion for educating students. Michael Schill is that leader," said Lillis.
While the university brings Schill up to speed in his new position, the university will continue to be managed by Interim President Scott Coltrane and Interim Provost Frances Bronet, according to the UO.
