FamilyCare Health Announces $250,000 in Minority Scholarships
Thursday, October 29, 2015
"We believe it's important to support these scholarship programs and bring more minority voices into our healthcare system," said Jeff Heatherington, President and CEO of FamilyCare. "This program honors the distinguished career of Dr. Anderson and helps to attract outstanding students to address the primary care shortage. We're proud to be a partner."
The Fund is named for William G Anderson, the first African-American member of the Board of Trustees of the American Osteopathic Association. He served on the Board for two decades and even served as President. He is best known for his role in leading the Coalition of Desegregation, a civil rights movement called the Albany Movement formed by local activists in Albany, Georgia in 1961.
Doctors of osteopathic medicine are trained to use a hands-on approach called osteopathic manipulative medicine in addition to traditional diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. They practice a "whole person" approach, helping patients develop lifestyles that don't just fight illness, but also help prevent disease.

A report from the Oregon Center for Public Policy shows how Oregonians rated their individual CCOs (Coordinated Care Organizations) in 2014 based on percentages of total customers who were satisfied with their service. The report shows both adult and child approval percentages for eight different categories including how well their doctor communicated to the quality of their health plan. GoLocalPDX averaged these approval percentages to determine the CCOs where customers were the most and least satisfied overall in 2014.
