Bomb Squad Removes Tripwire Device Near Forest Park

Monday, October 20, 2014

A tripwire device was removed this weekend by a bomb squad from the 4000 block of the Northwest Thunder Crest Drive, or “Firelane 3,” which leads into Forest Park.

The Metropolitan Explosives Disposal Unit (MEDU) responded to the report of a device around 5 pm on Saturday and found an improvised firearm with a pipe loaded with a shotgun shell, according to a press release from the Portland Police Bureau. A tripwire across the trail was connected to the device, but was slack. It appeared the device was inoperable, the release said.

The device was safely removed by a bomb tech and handed over as evidence.

Officers learned the device may have been on the trail since Tuesday. No other instances of other items being discovered have been reported and police did not find anything else suspicious in the immediate area. The press release said it is unclear why someone would place the device on the trail used by hikers, bikers, and equestrians.

Anyone with information about this incident or device is asked to contact the Portland Police Bureau's Gun Task Force at (503) 823-4106 or [email protected]
