The U.S. Department of Labor has investigated hundreds of Oregon restaurants over the last few years for fair labor violations. The findings resulted in some establishments owing tens of thousands of dollars in back pay to their employees, according to
data from the department.
The USDL is responsible for enforcing the Fair Labor Standards Act, which cover four areas: the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hours, overtime pay, recordkeeping and standards for youth employment. In Oregon, the restaurant industry saw 10 times the amount of investigations of other industries.
During the past five years, the USDL investigated more than 400 Oregon restaurants for fair labor violations, including back pay restitution. Altogether these restaurants agreed to pay a total of $1,874,393.75 in backwages since 2009.
