The World Beard and Mustache Championships in Portland

Facial hair enthusiasts from around the world gathered on Saturday at the Keller Auditorium for the 2014 Just For Men® World Beard and Moustache Championships in Portland.

Yes, there is a sport called "bearding" and those who participate in it are called "beardsmen." The Keller Auditorium was packed with thousands of beard enthusiasts as hundreds of beardsmen invaded Portland, boasting some of the world’s wildest whiskers. 

Contestants competed on Saturday for the gold in 18 different categories ranging from the delicate Dali to the gravity-defying Full Beard Freestyle.

The competitors faced-off to impress a lively panel of judges that included facial hair expert Dr. Allan Peterkin, Miss Oregon 2014 Rebecca Anderson, "Almost Famous" inspiration and marriage officiant Pennie Lane Trumbull among others. To determine the winners, the judges were asked which contestant’s facial hair best enhanced his overall appearance, style and personality. In the freestyle categories the judges were asked to consider originality and creativity as well.

Competitors went beard-to-beard in judging and 18 claimed first place titles in their respective categories. The overall champion was Madison Rowley who was the winner of the Garibaldi. Category-specific champions included Daniel Lawlor who won over the judges with his perfectly groomed Freestyle Moustache and Andrew Shuler whose Full Beard Natural charmed not just the judges but the crowd as well during his "victory crawl."

The show was emceed by show organizer Phil Olsen and the very writer of this piece, GoLocalPDX's Byron Beck.

The follicle-filled weekend kicked off on Friday with a world record attempt at Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown Portland.

After the follicle fest was over at the Keller the event wrapped with a late-night after party in inner Southeast.  

This year’s 18 bearded champions and categories included  Garibaldi and Overall Winner: Madison Rowley; Natural Moustache: John Cordes;  English Moustache: Snidely Mansfield; Dali Moustache: Jeffrey Well; Imperial Moustache: Roberto Campos; Hungarian Moustache: Gordie Blair; Freestyle Moustache: Daniel Lawlor; Goatee Natural: Jeffrey Carta; Fu Manchu: Steve Scarpa; Imperial Partial Beard: MJ Johnson; Musketeer: Jeffrey Moustache; Sideburns: Nathan Johnson; Amish Beard: Kevin Graybill; Partial Beard Freestyle: Kevin Riordan; Full Beard Natural: Andrew Shuler; Full Beard Styled Moustache: Travis McFarland; Verdi: Nic Mahoskey; and Full Beard Freestyle: Jeffrey Jensen.
