Study Names Portland Kinkiest City in U.S.

Monday, January 26, 2015

Portland is the kinkiest city in the U.S., according to a study by Kink University in San Francisco.

Porltand beat out New York, Los Angeles and San Fransisco in the study which evaluated the the BDSM, fetish and polyamorous factors of the 50 largest U.S. cities.

Four metrics were used to determine how kinky each city is: the total size of the kink-identified population, the size of the population relative to the city's size, the number of resources available for kink-identified people, and the total adult entertainment purchases in each city.

Portland has the highest percentage of kink-identified people at 3.99 percent.

“San Francisco is usually seen as the center of kink life in the United States, but rising housing costs resulting from the tech boom seem to have pushed the community northward,” said Mike Stabile, a spokesperson for Kink University.

Kink University conducted the study in advance of its “50 Skills of Grey Symposium,” which aims to educate the kink-curious how to safely and consensually explore themes addressed in the book and movie 50 Shades of Grey.
