On Tuesday, Jan. 6, Governor John Kitzhaber presented the Oregon Film & Television Office's Annual Governor's Awards for the categories "Film Advocate," "Innovation in Education," and "Achievement In Film Service" at the Eastside Exchange Building in Northeast Portland.

The recipients included: Gordon Sondland (Oregon Film Chair, President and CEO Aspen Companies) for “Achievement in Film Service”; Andy Mingo of Clackamas Community College for “Innovation in Education”; and national park staff from Zig Zag (Bill Westbrook, Mary Ellen Fitzgerald, Leanne Veldhuis, Kathleen Walker) and Crater Lake (Craig Ackerman and Carolyn Hill) for “Film Advocate.”

Several celebrities, including authors Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club) Cheryl Strayed (Wild) and television actor Russell Hornsby (Grimm) were present at the award ceremony. Also attending were Oregon state luminaries, including Vince Porter (Gov. Kitzhaber's Policy Advisor for Jobs and the Economy) and Tim Williams (Executive Director, Governor's Office of Film & Television). There was also a rare appearance by the first lady of the state of Oregon, Cylvia Hayes, who joined the governor for the presentation.

Representatives of regions from around the state (Eugene, Southern Oregon, Ashland and Bend) gave an updated production report for 2014 and a look ahead into 2015--sharing specific information on the projects and programs coming through the state’s film festivals, universities and media associations.

According to the film office, the number of jobs in the motion picture and video production sector in Oregon has increased more than 60 percent in the last 5 years, and the number of indigenous production companies has seen growth of more than 25 percent over that same period.

Sondland kicked off the ceremony by stating, "What a great year this has been," and shared that "in the last month or two it has been reported that, on the whole, Oregon was 8th in the U.S. for job growth during the month of September, and our high tech industry now employs about the same number of workers as the forest industry did in the 1970’s."

Speaking of awards, The Oregon Governor’s Office of Film & Television (AKA The Oregon Film Office) has been nominated for consideration for a Location Managers Guild of America  Award for “exemplary work on "Wild“."
