Happy New Year! Has your 2015 started strong? With the new year here, everyone is curious about bathroom, kitchen, and home design trends for 2015. Whether you plan to remodel your home or just enjoy dabbling in design, keep reading to find out the biggest home, bathroom, and kitchen design trends for 2015.

Kitchen Design Trends 2015

A couple recent trends are still going strong this year. One is our collective obsession with Morocco in the kitchen and elsewhere. Houzz’s 2015 kitchen design predictions include tile with “hints of Turkish and other Middle Eastern influences.” Art Nouveau and Art Deco themes will play a role. So will vibrant kitchen paint (more on 2015 color trends below).

Open shelving is another 2015 kitchen design trend continuing from previous years. It’s both practical and aesthetically pleasing. Open shelves visually enlarge your kitchen and show off your dinnerware. Houzz also expects warm-toned metals to rule 2015 kitchens, such as gold, bronze, and copper. These make beautiful faucets, knobs, and drawer pulls.

In kitchens, black paint and subway tile are unexpected new favorites. Quartz will displace granite as the go-to kitchen countertop material. Touch less faucets will become even more popular. According to the most recent National Kitchen & Bathroom Association Trends Survey, energy-efficient appliances and LED lighting are going strong. Get ready for a kitchen that’s better than ever.

Color & Paint Trends 2015

We can’t talk about home design trends for 2015 without mentioning color. Pantone’s color of the year for 2015 is Marsala (18-1438), a subdued burgundy. This is a color that should be used sparingly, so try it in canisters, dishtowels, accessories and artwork. It looks great with warm and cool wood cabinets alike, but it may trend out sooner than later, so I wouldn’t use it in anything that will be around for a while.

Pantone also names Mediterranean blues, olive, and of course grey as top colors for 2015. Gray’s runaway popularity shows no sign of slowing down. Homeowners, designers, and remodelers are in love with icy grays and sumptuous charcoal anywhere in the house. It may even be safe to say that it is the new “it” neutral, replacing the old beige of days past. Lighter grays create a perfect backdrop for dollops of color, darker tones add major drama and interest and all of the shades in between provide endless design possibilities.

House Beautiful has its own opinions about paint colors for 2015. The magazine predicts the rise of cheery pastels inspired by ‘80s Miami as well as ‘60s olive and orange. Time will tell...

Bathrooms Design Trends 2015

Bathrooms in 2015 should be three things: contemporary, spa-like, and accessible, according to the National Kitchen & Bathroom Association. Understandably, freestanding bathtubs will take center stage. These functional statement pieces can be vintage charmers or streamlined and modern. The best give you a tranquil view as you soak while keeping your book or glass of wine within reach.

Like elsewhere in the home, touch less faucets and gray color schemes will be big for bathrooms in 2015, according to Huffington Post. Houzz expects bigger showers, statement floor tile, and natural beauty to emerge as themes. Sustainability will continue to become mainstream, with water-saving technology and energy-efficient lighting being the new normal.

Finally, the National Kitchen & Bathroom Association expects 2015 to be big for under mount sinks and wall-hung floating vanities, and I have to agree. Under mount sinks are both attractive and enable countertop cleaning.

Other Interior Design Trends 2015

What are some other home design trends 2015 will bring? Well, people are paying attention to ceilings again, whether it’s molding or custom color lighting. Ceilings are replacing the accent wall. People are challenging the conventional wisdom of painting ceilings white or one shade lighter than the walls. We are now seeing the ceiling painted the same color as the walls, or clad in wallpaper, wood treatments and specialty finishes.

Art of Kitchens designer Kesha Pillay told Houzz that in 2015, homeowners and designers are leaning more toward home design that is less sleek and more warm and homey. Consistent with this thought, unfinished wood like driftwood is getting more common in living spaces.

Details says that with e-readers becoming ubiquitous, people are getting nostalgic about books. Library-themed living rooms and studies are charming and cozy. You don’t need a huge literature collection, either. Bookshelf wallpaper has been going strong since 2010. The Genuine Fake Bookshelf wallpaper by Deborah Bowness is hugely popular.

What’s Out in 2015?

Although many design trends in 2015 are holdovers from years past, a few elements are becoming extinct. Bowl-shaped vessel sinks are quickly fading away. And Yahoo! declares that taxidermy and chalkboard walls are on their way out. However, my take on trends in general is that if you still find joy in it or if it solves a problem for you and your family, it is always on trend.
