Beach Blanket Commando: Dos and Don’ts of Oregon’s Nude Beaches

Friday, June 12, 2015

Portland has not one, but two officially designated clothing-optional beaches just a short drive from downtown: Collins Beach on Sauvie Island and Rooster Rock State Park, not far from the Crown Point Visitors Center (but far enough that looky-loos can’t see you with their binoculars).

Rooster Rock

Rooster Rock is located at the mouth of the Columbia Gorge.

Truth is, there are plenty of places where people get naked in Oregon, like Portland’s infamous annual Naked Bike Ride, but that’s a slippery slope of legal rights, civil action and perceived intention that is best left alone when all you’re looking to do is tan your bum.

The two beaches where you can disrobe to your heart’s content are Collins Beach and Rooster Rock. Collins is situated in the midst of farmland and protected wildlife habitats. Rooster Rock is smack dab in the middle of the Columbia Gorge. Both are as well known for their natural wonders as they are for naturist wonders.

Such beauty doesn’t go unrecognized. A Travelors.com 2013 survey indicated that Collins is not just one of the top 10 nude beaches in the United States, but ranks No. 7 worldwide. With an understanding that Oregon’s nude beaches attract large crowds each summer it’s important to know what is cool and not so cool at these sun-worshiping hot spots.

Cool Vs. Not Cool Rating

 Cool

Please stay within the designated clothing optional areas.

Not Cool

Don’t suddenly decide to stroll into a family-friendly picnic area sans swimsuit. Nobody wants to see your hotdog while eating a hotdog and you will likely lose your beach-going privileges.

Cool

Outdoor activities such as volleyball, badminton and pumping iron have a long tradition at the beach, especially at nude beaches.

Not Cool

Enhancement products that help you “pump” up your male appendage are best saved for your own backyard or other private enclosure. Besides, the pneumatic sound scares the wildlife, if nothing else does.

Cool

Find the appropriate port-a-potty—or in an emergency, a secluded wooded area—to relieve yourself. And whatever you do, clean up after yourself. Nobody wants to step in your business.

Not Cool

Speaking of business. That guy in the bushes may or may not be taking a potty break. More likely than not, he’s just waiting for another person to follow him even deeper into the forest. Public encounters are not uncommon, but are also illegal. They will not only get you thrown out of the park, but might just end up on your permanent record. That also goes for the couples that creep out to the middle of the lagoon for some bouncy-bouncy. Just don’t do it.

Cool

Inhibitions have a way of falling away, especially when your clothes fall off. Go ahead and let your freak flag fly.

Not Cool

But don’t get so freaky that your behavior interrupts the individuals and groups that might in the same area as you. Nobody likes a loud, obnoxious sunbather—with or without clothes.

Cool

Take it all in. How many times during the course of your week do you really get to let it all hang out?

Not Cool

Most importantly, don’t stare. It’s hard enough to let it all swing free without someone looking, at your bodacious body or even worse, lingering at the corner of your beach mat. Up close and personal? That’s not cool. Not cool at all.
