Biwa Celebrates Its 8th Birthday with New Restaurant and Hamburger

Local Japanese fusion restaurant,
Biwa, is celebrating their 8th birthday by opening a new restaurant and bringing back the classic Biwa Hamburger.
In 2008 Biwa celebrated their first birthday by making some delicious hamburgers. The hamburgers have become a tradition, being served once every year. They will be serving the “only-discussed-in-hushed-tones” Biwa Hamburger, all night on Sunday, March 15th.
Biwa’s new sister restaurant and ramen joint, Noraneko (Japanese for stray cats), will be opening this Sunday as well. The small shop designed by Constructive Form Architecture, has created a intimate space with a natural wood, steel and concrete interior. From the moment you step through the front door, you will smell the yummy ramen and soup stock.
Expect to find a simple and savory menu of four ramens; ship, shoyu, miso, and vegetarian. They also will be serving tori kara age aka. Japanese style fried chicken, their special kimchi, and panfried pork dumplings (gyoza).
Noraneko will open at noon on Sunday, March 15th and will be open every day from noon until 10 pm. In April the restaurant will extend its hours until 2 am.

Pilot Season
A great way to have fun while also supporting your local writers and directors is to attend this year’s “Pilot Season”, sponsored by Action/Adventure Theatre. This will be the second annual gathering of Portland’s up and coming writers, directors, and creators for episodic media. Four lucky artists will have their pilot scripts chosen and premiered over the course of four weekends this spring. After viewing the pilots, the audience will have the chance to vote for their favorite and help an aspiring storyteller take the next step toward living their dream.

Lebowski Bash

Carson Ellis
On Saturday, come to Powell’s City Books for an afternoon with the prolific artist, Carson Ellis. Carson’s work has been seen in publications like the New York Times and the New Yorker. She is also the “illustrator in residence” for the Decembrists, according to her website. Now, Carson shares more of her talent through her first solo picture book, Home. Home is a picture book depicting all the many places that can be called a home, whether that place is a house, a ship, or the shell of a snail.

Ben Buswell
Get artsy with Marylhurst at its “I Do Not Belong in the Sky” exhibit featuring the artist, Ben Buswell. The exhibit features daring and abstract art and has received great reviews so far. “Buswell's work exists on the edge of dichotomies in several ways, between image and object, between language and experience, and between the physical and the spiritual,” said Blake Shell, The Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Director and Curator.

Labyrinth at OMSI
On Wednesday, March 11th, OMSI sponsors ‘Reel Science: Labyrinth.’ This will be an evening where film and science merge as Toby Froud, a sculptor, fabricator, performer, and puppeteer and Hair and Fur Fabricator at LAIKA, comes to OMSI to discuss the history of puppets in film. Verona Nights
If you want to support the art community but still keep your feet moving, then maybe you should check out the fundraising gala, Verona Nights. Verona Nights is sponsored by the Portland Actors Conservatory and is a black tie fundraiser and silent auction. Guests may dress up and dance during the masquerade themed ball that’s inspired by the Conservatory’s recent production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The conservatory hopes to raise $100,000, so put on your best gown and masquerade mask and help support your local actors.
