Oregon's population increased by over 40,000 people from 2013 to 2014 primarily by people moving to the state, according to Portland State University.

PSU's Population Research Center released population estimates for Oregon's cities and counties. In 2013 Oregon's population was 3,919,025 and by July of 2014 the population was 3,962,565.

The study found that 74% of Oregon's population growth was attributed to net migration, (movers-in minus movers-out), while just 26 percent was due to natural increase (the number of births minus the number of deaths).

“As the economy continues to improve, net migration in Oregon increases,” said Risa Proehl, thePopulation Research Center program manager. “This is not a new phenomenon.”

The net in-migration has either boosted population growth rates or has stabilized population losses, according to the study.

The counties that experienced the largest gains in population also have the largest populations in the state. Washington county and Multnomah counties added the highest number of people. Washington county added approximately 9,500 people and Multnomah county added about 9,200 people.

Portland showed the greatest increase of any city in Oregon adding 9,390 people. Bend, Salem, Beaverton, Eugene and Corvallis each added over 1,000 people in the past year.
