Data shows that the cliche's that Portland is the city where the "young come to retire" and everyone wants a "work-life" balance may be true.
Portland may want to compete with Seattle, San Francisco, Denver and Austin, but a new study shows that Portland has a work ethic work more like sleepy Jackson, Mississippi.
Of the 116 cities in the United States ranked, Portland ranked #90 on the list. The hearty work force in Anchorage, AK ranked first in the United States and ranking at the bottom of the list was the laid back city of Burlington, VT.

The Research
The research conducted by WalletHub shows that Americans "work 20 percent more hours yet are still less productive than our European peers."
"America’s obsession with higher output has indeed landed our nation at the top of the global food chain, but it’s also led to our image as workaholic robots, working longer days, taking fewer vacations and retiring much later. Only one in five Americans even step out for lunch these days while the Spaniards enjoy up to three-hour midday breaks to eat, nap and smell the rosas," said the study
The Methodology In order to identify where the hardest working Americans live, WalletHub’s analysts compared 116 of the most populated cities across six key metrics, which are listed below with their corresponding weights. Each metric was given a value between 0 and 100, wherein 100 is the best value for that metric and 0 is the worst. Data for metrics marked with an asterisk (*) were available only at the state level. We then calculated the overall score for each city using the weighted average across all metrics and ranked them accordingly. For our sample, we ensured that at least one city from each of the 50 states is represented. Please note that “city” refers to city proper and excludes surrounding metro areas. Direct Work Factors – Total Points: 80 Average Workweek Hours: Triple Weight (60 Points) Labor Force Participation Rate: Full Weight (20 Points) Note: This metric was calculated as “civilian population aged 16 to 64 in labor force” divided by “total civilian population aged 16 to 64.” Indirect Work Factors – Total Points: 20 Commute Time: Half Weight (5 Points) Workers with Multiple Jobs*: Half Weight (5 Points) Note: This metric was calculated as a percentage of total employment. Volunteer Hours per Resident: Half Weight (5 Points) Leisure Time Spent on an Average Day*: Half Weight (5 Points)
