GoLocalPDX was attacked both Tuesday and Wednesday by a series of attempted hacks that tracked back to IP addresses in China.
The attacks came in waves looking to access the core site. “This is the second major attack on the site since launch. We are pleased that the site was only disrupted for a few hours. No data was accessed,” said Josh Fenton, CEO.
Going back to the ISIS attack on the New York Times in August of 2013, there is a growing number of cyber attacks on media. The motivation for the attacks range from political responses to punish the media company for their reporting to efforts to gaining access to data.
“Media, like under industries, are constantly dealing with cyber attacks. Most hacking efforts in business are looking for consumer data, but in the case of the media it is often related to content. We have no idea of the motivation for these attacks on GoLocalPDX, but we appreciate the work of our technologists in the quick response” said Fenton.
GoLocalPDX launched in the fall of 2014 and to date has realized more than 14.6 million pageviews to date.
