Cranksgiving 2014: Purposeful Pedaling to Benefit Outside In

Thursday, November 20, 2014

Keep your resolve to ride year-round with fun rides that combine the pleasure of cycling with the spirit of giving. This weekend’s Cranksgiving ride, for example, combines a treasure hunt, food drive, and fun group riding to benefit Outside In.

Cranksgiving sends out teams of 2-5 riders who visit a list of stores and buy a list of food items and return to the race start/finish at Velo Cult. You don’t have to “race” to have a great time, but when you consider the vibe behind team names like Team Jive Turkey, Bride of Crankenstein, and Team Fried ‘Em Riders, how can you not dream up a silly costume and clever name.

In addition to winning fantastic prizes for categories such as Best Costume, First Team Back and Biggest Spenders, your participation can help Portland reclaim the coveted Top Banana Torphy from Seattle, who currently hold the award.

Organized by Puddlecycle, the ride brings together small groups of people for a purposeful pedal, as all purchased items are donated to Outside In, a non-profit which helps homeless youth and other marginalized people move towards improved health and self-sufficiency.

The event starts and ends at Velo Cult. Registration opens at 1:00 pm and the rides leaves at 2:00 pm. The cost? Variable. Riders need a minimum of $10 to buy stuff with, and are encouraged to bring extra cash if possible; the organizers are targeting a grand total of $3000 or more in donated goods.
