Project LUV Seat: Turning Airline Seats Into Sturdy and Fashionable Bags
Tuesday, November 04, 2014
Earlier this year Southwest Airlines redesigned their cabins with more lightweight material, in order to save fuel. The airline replaced more than 80,000 leather seat covers with new ones, which left acres of leather just headed to landfills.
In order to stay committed to environmental sustainability, Southwest partnered with Portland design brand Looptworks to create ‘The Luv Seat Collection.’
The ‘Luv Seat Collection’ includes a limited edition dark blue and brown duffle, backpack and tote now available for pre-order. All the bags are handmade in the Pacific Northwest, conserving more than 4,000 gallons of water per bag.
Retail price for the Luv Seat Convertible Tote, starts at $150 and incorporates the Southwest Airlines water resistant leather seat covers. The tote is perfect for everyday use because it has expandable side zippers and can be worn as a handbag or shoulder bag.
The Luv Seat Weekender Bag which retails at $225, has a upcycled cotton canvas lining that is big enough to pack your clothes, accessories, and electronics for overnight or weekend trips.
Former Nike and Adidas employees Scott Hamlin and Gary Peck founded Looptworks in 2009. Looptworks have partnered with Patagonia, Toyota, and New Belgium Brewing Company. To date they have saved more than 40 million gallons of water and is committed to zero waste, using only materials that already exist and offering lifetime warranties on all of their products.
