Tanya Tagaq is an Inuit throat singer performing at Sept. 13 at the Portland Institute of Contemporary Art's (PICA) Time Based Art Festival (TBA).

In her sound art performance Tagaq pairs her music with the 1922 film Nanook of the North. Her vocal performance aims to mimic the backdrop of the film and portray powerful authentic emotion.

She recalls animal noises and various other nature sounds in her performances with a haunting, contemporary and futuristic sound, according to PICA.

Tagaq will be joined by violinist Jesse Zubot, drummer Jean Martin, and Juno Award-winning composer Derek Charke's original film score. The score intends to frame the vintage semi-documentary of an Inuk family in a contemporary light.

Tagaq performs her sound art at at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at Portland State University's Lincoln Performance Hall. The shows are open to all ages. Tickets are $30 and $24 for PICA members.
